Champions League matchday five predictions
There are six Champions League matches not featuring an English side on Wednesday. Monaco face a potentially tricky trip to Cyprus to face Pafos while two European giants clash in Spain when Atletico Madrid meet Inter, who have won their opening four games in the competition.
Real Madrid will be hoping to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat against Liverpool by winning in Greece against Olympiakos.
FC Copenhagen vs Kairat Almaty
Both Copenhagen and Kairat Almaty have taken just one point from their first four games and it is difficult to be confident about either of the strugglers gaining their first win on Wednesday.
The Danes’ defensive issues were exposed when they conceded four goals against both Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham in their last two games, so keeping things tight will be the priority, but their opponents have scored just twice in the competition this season, so it looks unlikely to be a contest that catches fire.
Pafos vs Monaco
It will not have been a surprise for many to see Pafos lose 5-1 at home to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich but the Cypriots have proved a tough nut to crack in the Champions League, as Monaco could discover on this week’s visit.
Having fought their way through three qualifying rounds, Pafos have kept clean sheets in their other three league-phase games and while goalless draws against Olympiakos and Kairat Almaty may not be regarded as startling, a 1-0 victory over Villarreal raised eyebrows.
Monaco won their last away Champions League game against Bodo/Glimt but they have lost in each of their last three Ligue 1 outings, suffering successive 4-1 defeats to Lens and Rennes.
They lost their opening game in this competition by the same scoreline at Club Brugge, so victory here is no formality for Monaco and backing Pafos in the double-chance market looks a sensible option.
Atletico Madrid vs Inter
Atletico Madrid’s four Champions League matches have featured 19 goals and another open encounter is anticipated when they face Inter.
The only defeats the Spaniards have suffered since the opening day of the La Liga season came in visits to Liverpool and Arsenal and they have won their last eight home matches, scoring at least twice in four of their last five outings.
Don’t rule out Inter though, even after last year’s finalists suffered a 1-0 derby defeat to Milan on Sunday.
Inter had won ten of their 11 games before that and have scored at least twice in five of their last seven aways.
They should not be intimidated having scored 11 goals in four Champions League victories this term, so expect both teams to contribute to a game with plenty of goals.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Atalanta
Atalanta’s 1-0 win over Marseille in their most recent Champions League outing is their only win in their last nine games and their trip to Eintracht Frankfurt looks set to be a high-scoring affair after they conceded three against both Sassuolo and Napoli in their last two Serie A matches.
However, despite their opponents’ poor run, it is difficult to have much faith in Frankfurt as while they beat Galatasaray 5-1, they also lost to Atletico Madrid and Liverpool by the same scoreline in this season’s competition.
They are sixth in the Bundesliga despite having conceded 22 goals in their 11 games – they have scored 27 – so, after a 4-3 win against Cologne on Saturday, this has all the ingredients of being another goalfest.
Olympiakos vs Real Madrid
Real Madrid have held on to their lead in La Liga despite draws against Rayo Vallecano and Elche, where they needed a late Jude Bellingham equaliser to get anything at the weekend.
A 1-0 loss at Liverpool ended their perfect start in the Champions League and a trip to Olympiakos, who have failed to win their last nine matches in Europe’s premier competition, looks an ideal opportunity for Los Blancos to get back on the winning trail.
Sporting vs Club Brugge
Sporting are unbeaten in their last nine matches and have won both of their home games in this competition, including a 2-1 success over Marseille, who are flying in Ligue 1.
They suffered a narrow defeat in Napoli and drew at Juventus, so their pedigree is strong, but Club Brugge have a chance to make a positive impact in Portugal, having been controversially denied a winner in their 3-3 home draw with Barcelona.
They have lost to Bayern Munich and Atalanta on the road, but they are likely to be positive in an entertaining clash.
