Live: Zverev perfect on first serves in the third

We’re deadlocked at 3-3 in the third set and Alexander Zverev has put on a serving masterclass in this set.

Zverev has landed 11/12 of his first serves and has won every single first-serve point so far in the set, going 11/11.

Diallo too has gone 10/10 on his own first serve points, but hasn’t landed them as regularly as the German.

Not getting anywhere in a hurry inside the AO

Given ground passes have sold out for day one of the main tournament, it’s not overly surprising it’s absolutely packed in here.

Fans are not getting around quickly, with lines for most food and drink places – not to mention the actual tennis. But everyone seems to be in great spirits.

Vibes are high, just like the UV index (if you’re on your way, make sure to pack the sunscreen).

Live: Schoolkate gets back on serve against hobbling Frenchman

Moutet has a two-handed backhand and he hit this shot midway through the second set:

So you can imagine the sort of tennis he’s conjuring when he’s just trying to stand and deliver from the back of the court.

He’s coming up with excellent drop shots and off-pace serves that are messing with the rhythm of Australian Tristan Schoolkate.

It’s earning the French 32nd seed a few points here and there, but Schoolkate is maintaining enough focus to hold, break and hold to get back to 3-3 in the third set.

If this was the second set, I think Moutet may have retired already, but just three games from victory he’s going to try to continue.

Schoolkate needs to make it into the fourth set because if he does there’s a good chance Moutet pulls the pin.

Live: Injury drama for Corentin Moutet against Australian Tristan Schoolkate

After going up two sets and 2-0 in the third against Australian Tristan Schoolkate, French 32nd seed Corentin Moutet is suddenly in serious trouble with an apparent hamstring injury.

He pulled up sore after jamming his left leg during a rally and ripped off the strapping around his left thigh.

Moutet is grabbing at his hamstring and maybe around towards his groin a little bit.

He’s not jumping on serves, just rolling in sliced efforts, and simply trying to hit winners with every shot. It’s worked for him in this game, as he takes a 3-0 lead in the set and the trainers are coming out to check on him.

Live for set number five

We have our first five-setter going on between Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović and Argentinian Tomás Martín Etcheverry.

There’s a party atmosphere out there as the world number 60 and 62, respectively, go hammer and tong.

Live: Zverev levels things up, dominates second set

Gabriel Diallo avoided being bagelled, but that was just about the only thing that went right for the Canadian in the second set.

Zverev raced out to a 5-0 lead before Diallo on his first game of the second set.

The No.3 seed closed things out with minimal fuss to take the second set 6-1, levelling this thing at one set apiece.

Zverev was dominant on his first-serve points in that set, winning 12/13.

Diallo hit just two winners for the set and had 11 unforced errors.

Ukrainian seeds trying to avenge Yastremska’s loss

(Getty)

After 26th seed Dayana Yastremska became the first seed to lose at this year’s Australian Open, two more Ukrainian stars are in fine form on court.

On John Cain Arena, 12th seed and recent champion in Auckland Elina Svitolina has won the first set 6-4 over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.

And on ANZ Arena, 20th seed and Brisbane International runner-up Marta Kostyuk has taken the first-set tiebreak 7-4 against Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot.

Live: Gutsy Schoolkate falls behind two sets to love

Australian Tristan Schoolkate is deep in a hole against 32nd seed Corentin Moutet.

Having already lost the first set 6-4, he fights off two break points at 5-5 in the second to hold serve and ultimately force the tiebreak.

But the often-erratic French leftie locked during the breaker and powered into the third with a 7-1 win.

Schoolkate needs a big ladder to get out of this one.

Live: Zverev strikes first in second set

We’ve seen a different Alexander Zverev to start the second set.

The German has barely put a foot wrong and has raced out to a 3-0 lead after breaking Diallo and then consolidating it.

Diallo’s game has been error-strewn so far in the early stages of this second set.

Diallo blowing through shoelaces

Gabriel Diallo is on fire on Rod Laver Arena against Alex Zverev, but his shoelaces can’t handle it.

He broke his second pair of the match on this point.

Live: Diallo takes out first set after dominant tiebreak

(Getty)

We’re officially on upset alert here on Rod Laver Arena folks!

The crowd is humming as Gabriel Diallo takes the first set off Alexander Zverev after dominating the tiebreak 7-1.

Zverev had absolutely no answers for the big-hitting Canadian, and was a picture of frustration as he whacked a ball high into the Melbourne sky after losing a point.

Diallo with 16 winners to Zverev’s 10 in the first set as well as going 12/16 on net points.

Live: Zverev saves set point with huge serves

Alexander Zverev is having to fight tooth and nail out here.

After drawing to 4-4, he faced a set point when Diallo went up 40-30 leading 5-4 in the set, but pulled out a hat-trick of superb serves to draw level once again.

It’s been a fantastic match so far out on Rod Laver Arena.

Live: Zverev breaks back from 0-40 down

Alexander Zverev lets out an audible “come on” as Gabriel Diallo coughs up his break courtesy of another unforced error.

Diallo went up 40-0 on his own serve with a chance to take a 5-2 lead in the set, but then saw his advantage dwindle due to a couple of loose serves, including a double-fault, and then some rash forehands.

Instead of 5-2, the score is now 4-3 Diallo’s way with a Zverev service game to come.

What’s with the long lines?

Why are the queues to get in taking so long? Surely Melbourne Park is very experienced with large crowds. What’s going wrong today?

Hi Trish,

I’m not sure the reason, but certainly the sold-out day passes don’t help.

From reports on the ground, the number of people outside the grounds is starting to dwindle, so fans are getting through the gates at least.

First men’s seed knocked out

Flavio Cobolli. (Getty)

Italian 20th seed Flavio Cobolli has been knocked out by 23-year-old British qualifier Arthur Fery.

Cobolli struggled physically throughout the three sets and appeared to be battling sickness.

Fery, meanwhile, is through to the second round at a major for the second time, upsetting a 20th seed for the second time.

In front of his home fans at Wimbledon last year, Fery upset Australian Alexei Popyrin in four sets.

This is Fery’s first grand slam main draw appearance outside Wimbledon, where he’s played the past three years.

Live: Diallo grabs early break against Zverev

The No.3 seed is in a spot of bother early on, finding himself in a 3-1 hole against Diallo.

Diallo with a number of superb winners in that last Zverev service game, including a two-handed passing shot down the line.

It also came as he caused a stoppage due to a broken shoelace which no doubt frustrated Zverev, who was forced to wait as Diallo tended to his shoes.

Live: Aussie Schoolkate drops first set

French 32nd seed Corentin Moutet is pulling out all the tricks against Australian Tristan Schoolkate and takes the first set 6-4.

Schoolkate fought off two set points and even had his first look at a break point at 5-4, but couldn’t stop the leftie from going one set up.

Live: Diallo off to a solid start against Zverev

Gabriel Diallo is creaming the heck out of the ball early on in his first-round clash against Alexander Zverev.

The Canadian takes a 2-1 lead in the first set courtesy of a thundering 215kph serve to close it out.

The crowd is slowly building inside Rod Laver Arena, but there are still heaps of empty seats.

Feder. Alcaraz. Sakkari.

Greece’s Maria Sakkari is through to the second round after beating Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 19 minutes on Margaret Court Arena.

And the comprehensive victory gave us an early contender for shot of the tournament, with Sakkari ripping a forehand return winner around the net post at full stretch.

“I could never imagine that I could actually hit that kind of return.

“You see when Roger [Federer] hits it, Carlos [Alcaraz] and then myself. I’m pretty sure it’s gonna [be] one of the best shots of the tournament.”
