FC Noah v AZ Alkmaar
WHEN: Thursday, 19th of February, 5.45pm
WHERE: Hanrapetakan Stadium, Yerevan
TV: discovery+
FC Noah and the Draw
The overexposure the average Irishman now has to AZ due to those weird Twitter accounts praising every single Troy Parrott pass is wearing thin.
Of course the reality is that they’re far closer to bottom of the Eredivisie than the top, points-wise.
And when it comes to this competition in particular, given the wide geographical spread across the continent, we have to consider how big a deal home advantage is. There were 27 away wins in the group stage, accounting for 25% of all games resulting in an away victory.
But you naturally need to assess everything on its merits.
AZ on the road? Hammered 4-0 by AEK. Beaten comprehensively by Palace. They handled business against Kosovan side Drita, at least.
Noah boasted home wins over Legia Warsaw and Rijeka.
You’re asking me to take a relatively skinny price about an away win, when Mateo Chavez missed out through suspension, Jordy Clasie, Denso Kasius and Wouter Goes are all likely not in the XI? No thanks.
Zrinjski v Crystal Palace
WHEN: Thursday, 19th of February, 5.45pm
WHERE: Bijeli Brijeg Stadium, Mostar
TV: TNT Sports 1
Crystal Palace (-1)
In fairness, I did say everything had to be assessed on its own merits.
You might think on the face of it that Mostar’s home form has been pretty good; welcoming teams to a freezing cold south Bosnian winter would naturally work in their favour.
But context is required: they hammered the Red Imps, snuck past Hacken and took a point from Rapid Wien.
All three have been eliminated from the competition, while Rapid finished bottom.
A part of me feels like Palace took this competition for granted – but given the slap in the face of losing to Burnley despite being two goals to the good last week, I’m sure they’ll be laser-focused here, and this is the biggest gulf in class between two sides in the knockout rounds.
And the arrivals of Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand Larsen should really aid their European pedigree against teams more difficult to break down.
KuPS v Lech Poznan
WHEN: Thursday, 19th of February, 5.45pm
WHERE: Tammelan Stadion, Tampere.
TV: discovery+
Mikael Ishak to Score Anytime
I went back and forth on this one – making the case for the hosts who only tasted defeat once in their entire group campaign, only to realise that Lech have so many goals in their side and backing KuPS to match them would be folly.
It then dawned on me that I could completely avoid all of that and just back the in-form Swede to find the net.
He’s the top scorer in the competition; netted four times in their group stage games, and has a total of 23 goals to his name so far this season.
And the best bit about all of it? Fixture congestion can be a worry for in-form strikers, but he was suspended against Piast Gliwice at the weekend, so he’s flying fit.
It could be a long night for Johannes Kreidl.
Jagiellonia Bialystock v Fiorentina
WHEN: Thursday, 19th of February, 8pm
WHERE: Chorten Arena, Bialystock
TV: discovery+
Jagiellonia and the Draw
The loss of Albert Guðmundsson will be greatly felt in Florence as the creative spark in the side is now going to be a long-term absentee.
Reshuffling attacking patterns is tough in games where you’re expected on the front foot, and while Manor Solomon and Jack Harrison are primed to offer a boost in that department, having enough time to get a plan together to land a win in an atmosphere like they’ll expect in Poland is a tough ask.
That 2-1 win in Coma will come as a welcome boost, but they were absolutely battered and the game fell into their hands somewhat. They’ll be expected to have the majority of the possession in this game, and I’m not sure it’ll suit them.
As we’ve stated on this preview, you need to throw out any wins against Rapid – and that really was the only time Fiorentina looked even semi-impressive on their travels in the group stage.
I’ll back them not to win at the prices.
